About - OZ Wind

"OZ Wind Engineering" has evolved from from my fascination and enthusiasm in converting wind energy into useable power, either as a motivating force such as sailing or as a power source with wind turbines. From my teens into adulthood, wind/sailing has been a passion and driving force. However, now as a consequence of being involved with Off Grid Systems transitioned into making power with wind turbines, as well as to offer sound honest advise with quality products that work to their maximium performance.

A Bit of History - My trade base is a Diesel and Heavy Earth Moving Equipment Fitter. This lead to working in the Central Queensland coal mines for more than 20 years on some of the worlds largest mining and earthmoving equipment. My working career was heavily involved in Hydraulics, Komatsu, Cat earthmoving machinery and Marion, Bucyrus & P&H Draglines, empoyed with BHP & Rio Tinto and Komatsu in Central Queensland.

We strive for the best performance and safety with wind turbines which means I am constantly updating and changing to achieve the best possible power output . If it is from the F&P based , Axial Flux or better quality imported components it is all dealing with specializing in wind turbines. We then transform them with the OZ Wind GOE222 blades and any other modifications and checks that I guarantee vastly improves accumulated power output performance and safe reliable operation.

The GOE222 Blade Profile is the driven power source and why OZ Wind turbines leave other turbines behind, with the aluminium airfoil is now manufactured and extruded here in Australia. This is a recognized accredited airfoil that was originally designed in Germany at the Gottingin University in the 1930s when airfoil design was at its peak, hence the number 222 being its position in the design phase. From testing and comparing this airfoil there is absolutely no need for a twisted taper type blade design with small wind turbines, The majority of blades on the market have no resemblance to a airfoil and mostly more for the appearance value only. Being able to make the most out of wind in the 3 ~ 8m/s (12 - 30klm) is paramount as in high wind you can make power using fence pailings .

Wind is not like solar and relys on the rpms given from the lift created by the wind on the blade airfoil and the effiency that airfoil to create lift at a given wind speed . The rpm that the turbine Alternator starts producing power is called "Cut In Rpm " . From that point increased rpms then create power "Amps" that start to act as load against the rpms of the blade rpm . If the airfoil is of poor design then the blades stall giving minimal output such as pipe blades or the common Clark Y airfoil . Also matching alternator cut in rpm to where the blades will perform at their optium is critical and can be likened to driving a manual car and selecting the correct gear .

Controlling the turbine power is again not as simple as solar but can be easily done . A wind tubine must be kept in a loaded state or it will run away " overspeed" . It can be done in very simple ways and most quality solar controllers have the ability to control an external relay . There are 2 basic forms Dump or Diversion contoll. Dump - is switching a load with a suitable relay on and off that is connected to the battery that matches maxium turbine output, at an upper voltage and off at the low voltage setting. Diversion , the turbine power is redirected to a correcty sized load ( Resistor Bank ) when the upper voltage is reached and off when low voltage setting is reached .

At present OZ Wind Engineering is steadly growing and offering from the basic kit type Wind Turbines for a DIY person and can supply parts advice, kits , contol options on a one to one basis, Then through to the mid range 1kW ~ 2.5kW in stock and up to 3 & 5kW Turbines with variable pitch blade hubs . Also new is 1kw & 2kw 24/48 MF( Manual Furl ) Turbines that are afordable, give outstanding performance due to the low RPM Alternators which also make for quiet operation . Passing on knowledge that I have learnt so it gives our customers a big leap forward to owning and setting up a system that is tested and can perform to its maximium.

We are now adding more and more wind and and also recomed and sell Victron off-grid components Also stocking 100, 200 & 400A/hr GBSLithium Batteries with tested Off Grid suited OZ Wind BMS-CMS ( Battery Monitor Systems & Cell Monitor System ) as well Lithium ready Wind voltage controls. Also for what I call Urban Off Grid Hybrid Systems such as I have installed to run my house and workshop to make OZ Wind a 100% carbon neutral business.
